CCS is considered an indispensable tool in global efforts to reduce and remove damaging CO2 emissions (IPCC 2023). Indeed, CCS is a key plank of the EU’s decarbonisation strategy, facilitated by the Industrial Carbon Management Strategy (ICM) and Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA).

Designed to stimulate the development of a domestic EU storage market, the NZIA mandates a 50 Mtpa CO2 injection capacity by 2030 target. While uncertainties remain as to whether this target will be met, it is clear that the vast majority of storage projects are located in and around the North Sea region. This begs the question: What is the CCS future for other regions?

PilotSTRATEGY (2021-2026) has conducted detailed investigations into deep saline aquifers (DSA) covering industrial regions of Southern and Eastern Europe. Designed to advance understanding of and increase confidence in DSAs, the outcomes contribute significantly towards progression on FIDs and storage permitting and approvals.

We invite you to join us to discuss the results and outcomes from 5 years’ work covering geo-characterisation, simulation, pilot development, safety and societal acceptability, and to consider the future for CCS across Southern and Eastern Europe.
