networking session at the European Researcher's Night 2024

The PilotSTRATEGY Portuguese team has been hard at work, contributing to a roadmap, and participating in recent workshops & events.

Below is a summary of the contribution to the Roadmap for the "Ornamental Stones" industrial sector, as well as the participation at the 7th International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage, and European Researcher's Night 2024.

Decarbonisation Roadmap for the Ornamental Stones Sector: Contribution of the Portuguese Team

The Portuguese team was invite to contribute to the decarbonisation roadmap for the industrial sector of “ornamental stones”, following a presentation of PilotSTRATEGY to the CTCV association, the entity commissioned to develop the roadmap, and that is also a member of the Portuguese Regional Stakeholder Committee. The contribution of the team focused on the potential of mineral carbonation and enhanced weathering of the waste rocks, and was led by Jorge Pedro, Patricia Moita and Paula Afonso, from the University of Évora.

Portuguese team shares CCS research at 7th International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage

With the objective of disseminating the scientific research work on CCS, Pedro Pereira, a member of the Portuguese team, participated in the 7th International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage (online). Pedro's talk — Update on the design of the offshore CO2 injection site in Portugal — presented the research and development work that has been conducted by the Portuguese team in PilotSTRATEGY. The workshop, organised by IEAGHG, GCCC (Gulf Coast Carbon Center) and the University of Texas at Austin (USA), took place on 17th and 18th September 2024. It was attended by different specialists from the industry and other Energy Institutions (around 50 participants in person and 90 online), where the most recent advances in Offshore Geological Storage of CO2 on a world scale were presented and discussed.

Portuguese team participates in the European Researcher's Night 2024: “The role of geosciences in the energy transition”

With the objective to disseminate the CCS technologies for the general public, on the 27th of September 2024 PilotSTRATEGY's Portuguese team participated in the European Researchers' Night under the theme “SCIGLO - Science for Global Challenges”. The activity, led by Pedro Pereira, was intended to disseminate scientific work on CO2 capture, transport and storage that has been carried out by the Portuguese team. The event was organised in a public space in Évora, Portugal, and visitors had the opportunity to watch technical videos about the technology, see hand samples of rocks and petrographic microscopes (in the form of slides) which represent the different types of rocks that are essential for a CO2 geological reservoir and a sealing rock, see and manipulate analogue models of a CO2 geological reservoir, and answer a short survey on the topics. The activity was well attended by the general public, which showed great interest and curiosity about CO2 capture, transport and geological storage technology. Researchers Júlio Carneiro, Ana Catarina Pinho, Paula Afonso, Paulo Mesquita, Augusto Mazezo, Karwan Khudhur, Pedro Madureira, Carlos Ribeiro, Madalena Barata and Rui Veloso, members of the PilotStrategy and CTS team, were involved in the organisation and development of the activity.
