On 13 September, a citizen engagement event was organised in Figueira da Foz, as part of the European PilotSTRATEGY project. The event was dedicated to educating the public about CO2 Capture, Transport and Geological Storage technology and learning about the work of the project team in installing a pilot CO2 injection test in an offshore area near Figueira da Foz.

The locals had the opportunity to visit an interactive exhibition where they could observe some global data on CO2 emissions, analogue models, and scale models designed to clarify the principles of the technology. The visit was accompanied by members of the project team, who clarified questions and responded to the issues raised by the participants.

At the end, the visitors were invited to share their opinions, concerns and suggestions regarding the implementation of the technology and to give their informed opinion on the pilot test in the region.

The session was organised by the team from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon, represented by Ana Delicado and Jussara Rowland, in collaboration with the teachers and researchers at the University of Évora (Júlio Carneiro, Pedro Madureira, Ana Catarina Pinho, Pedro Pereira, Paulo Mesquita, Paula Afonso and Gourav Soni). The organisation also received support from the Estremoz Science Centre and professor Rui Dias, Department of Geosciences at the University of Évora.

The event provided an opportunity to bring science closer to the local community and promote an informed debate on the role of CO2 geological storage technology in combating climate change.
