The PilotSTRATEGY team from the Portugal region was invited to present its work in the offshore at the 6th International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage, held in Aberdeen from 13th to 15th of September, 2023, organized by BEG of University of Texas in collaboration with IEAGHG and Storegga. This workshop gathered in the University of Aberdeen experts from offshore CCS projects around the world, such as Acorn, Porthos, Northern Lights and Viking, among other major international projects. It was a great time to explore the global developments in offshore geological CO2 storage and share expertise and findings.

Dr. Maria Helena Caeiro, from the University of Evora, had the chance to present the advances of PilotStrategy in Portugal during the projects’ roundups, which was very well appreciated by the audience. The workshop had 190 delegates (60 in-person and 130 virtual). It held sessions covering several topics of relevance for the geological storage of CO2 in the offshore, such as stakeholder engagement, monitoring, environmental aspects, transport & infrastructure, interaction with other users of the seabed, injection & wells and legal, regulatory & accounting.

As take-home messages, it was highlighted the impressive progress made in developing CCS projects in the offshore and the importance of knowledge transfer, especially the focus on the regulation and licensing, monitoring, positive public engagement and basin-wide management. IEAGHG will produce a report of the workshop to be shared online.
