A technical visit to the region of Setúbal, Portugal, was organised on 27th March 2025 as part of the PilotSTRATEGY and CTS project. The visit was organised by engineers Carlos Abreu (SECIL) and Nuno Rodrigues (NAVIGATOR), whose friendliness and enthusiasm were fundamental to the success of the experience, including the discussion session held on the respective company's
facilities.

With the international partners of the project, researchers from the Department of Geosciences at the University of Évora, and representatives from the pulp & paper and cement industries taking part, the objective was to exchange know-how between research and industry on the topic of decarbonisation in Portugal and the geological storage of CO2. The visitors were received by members of SECIL and NAVIGATOR, two of the main Portuguese companies active in adopting technological innovations to promote the decarbonisation of their industry. They visited two harbour stations with the potential to grow into CO2 transport hubs via ship, as well as pulp & paper and cement factories in the region that could capture their CO2 emissions in the future, with a view to storing them in deep geological reservoirs. The potential CO2 injection site, located offshore of Figueira da Foz, has been characterised by the team from the University of Évora under the European Union-funded PilotSTRATEGY project.

According to Júlio Carneiro, national coordinator of the CTS and PilotSTRATEGY projects, "The logistical assessments discussed during the technical visit were of great importance for understanding the logistical viability of the CCUS technology chain for Portugal and opened doors for future work to be carried out."
